Repotting is an essential part of bonsai care as it helps the tree maintain its health and vitality. Over time, the roots of a bonsai can become compacted and root-bound, making it difficult for the tree to absorb nutrients and water. Repotting allows for the roots to be pruned and repositioned, promoting healthy growth and development.
When repotting your bonsai, it is important to choose the right time of year and use the proper soil mix. Typically, bonsai should be repotted every 2-3 years, depending on the species and growth rate. Make sure to gently remove the tree from its pot, carefully cut down some the roots to size you need for your pot and leaving enough roots to allow them to regrow, replant it in fresh soil. Every tree will need a slightly different mix of soil so make sure you research your trees needs.
Water the tree thoroughly after repotting and place it in a shaded area to recover. Avoid leaving it out in the cold after pruning as this can shock your tree and cause problems.
Make you use a mesh to cover the holes at the bottom of your pot to avoid soil running out but allowing water to run through it.
Make sure you tie your tree into the pot as it will be loose now the roots are not holding it in place
